Camera Showdown: Redmi CC9 Pro (Note10 Pro) vs. OnePlus 7 Pro Review/ specifications

In our search for the best camera phone, it’s time yet again to pit two popular mobile devices against each other to determine which is truly the best smartphone out of the bunch. Today’s specimens? The Xiaomi Mi CC9 Pro Premium Edition (a.k.a Mi Note 10 pro) and the OnePlus 7 Pro.

The CC9 Pro is one of Xiaomi’s versatile, “top tier” Android devices, touted for its 108-megapixel primary camera with 8P lens (using Samsung HMX sensor) and powerful hybrid zoom, a penta-camera setup which also includes a 12 MP short telephoto lens, 8MP long telephoto lens, 20 MP ultra-wide lens, and f/2.4 macro lens. It also features a large 5260mAh battery and an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G chipset.

The OnePlus 7 Pro, on the other hand, was launched in May of 2019 and shown that the Chinese phone manufacturer can compete in the smartphone big leagues, packing a retractable selfie camera and its own triple-lens array that includes a 48MP standard, 16MP wide-angle, and 8MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom.

Which of these two comes out on top in the camera department? Read on as we compare phone to phone and find who takes the photography crown.

Xiaomi Redmi CC9Pro and OnePlus 7 Pro Camera Comparisons

To compare mobile phone cameras, we took shots with each in a variety of conditions, comparing the photos to similar shots from other, similar smartphones, which served as a sort of control for the whole group. Here’s what we found.

 Color Test_ Camera Samples

Camera setting: Auto
When it comes to colors, both the CC9 Pro and the OnePlus 7 Pro do an admirable (though not completely identical) job shooting on auto mode. White balance is good on both cameras, but the OnePlus 7 Pro offers warmer tones, along with more vivid and saturated colors when compared to the CC9 Pro.

 Backlight Test_Camera Samples

Camera setting: Auto
Moving onto our backlit subject, the CC9 Pro provided a less harsh background exposure than the OnePlus 7 Pro, which provided more accurate exposure on the subject and higher dynamic range. Arguments for quality can be made either way on this factor.

 Bokeh Test_Camera Samples

Camera setting
• Bokeh mode (or Portrait mode)
  CC9 Pro: mid-range; OnePlus 7 Pro: default

Both cameras were capable of producing appealing Bokeh effects and were nearly comparable in this regard. OnePlus7 Pro did a slightly better job of keeping the subject sharp and in-focus and had a more natural background blur, but the difference was slight enough not to be immediately noticeable.

 Wide Angle Test_Camera Samples

Camera setting
• Wide-angle mode

During the wide-angle test, the CC9 Pro offered a greater field of view and less distortion on the principal subject. Zooming in, you can also note that the CC9 Pro provides greater overall image clarity, with decreased image noise on both the subject and background.

 Night Mode Test_ Camera Samples

Camera setting
• Night mode

At night is where the CC9 Pro really shines. It’s got the greatest color accuracy and nighttime image clarity of the two cameras and stuck out as a serious performer in this scenario. Where the OnePlus 7 Pro has the CC9 Pro beat, though, is speed, taking only half as long to render low light shots.

Xiaomi CC9 Pro: Night Mode vs 108MP Mode

The CC9 Pro has multiple options for shooting low-light photographs, with the phone’s Night Mode offering the most natural colors and balanced exposure when compared to 108MP Mode. What’s more, the backgrounds on Night Mode appear more lively, with better highlights and improved contrast. For outdoor photos in low-light conditions, Night Mode is the superior option.

Pros & Cons

There’s good and bad to everything, and here’s where we thought the Xiaomi CC9 Pro’s camera excelled:
  • Performs well under most conditions
  • Accurate colors
  • Takes good photos with accurate colors in low-light scenarios
There were some drawbacks, however, such as:
  • Relatively poor exposure on backlit subjects
  • Low light photos take considerably longer to render
  • Edges on some subjects lack sharpness, particularly in night shots
The OnePlus 7 Pro also had its fair share of positive qualities:
  • Vibrant color representation
  • Excellent autofocusing
  • Better bokeh shots
But there were some areas where we thought the OnePlus 7 Pro’s camera was lacking:
  • Not quite as capable of rendering the colors accurately in low light

Final Thoughts

Both cameras performed admirably, with the OnePlus 7 Pro showing noticeable improvement over previous iterations. In the end, though, the title of the best camera goes to the CC9 Pro, which we feel took a slight edge in terms of quality and performance.

The CC9 Pro sports some high-level adaptability. While we might have had some reservations about the color in some select situations, the camera was able to easily rise to just about any challenge we could throw at it. Particularly where capturing the colors and accurately representing nighttime shots were concerned, the CC9 Pro performed admirably, and left us impressed by its capabilities. Which of our two options is the best mobile phone for you? That depends on your particular goals, as there’s an argument to be made that the OnePlus 7 Pro outperforms the CC9 Pro in certain other areas. If you’re all about having a great camera in your pocket, though, the CC9 Pro is the victor, albeit by a slim margin.
