Galaxy A7 2018's "Triple-Camera"

The Galaxy A7’s three rear cameras include an 8-megapixel ultra-wide sensor with a field of view of 120 degrees, a main sensor with 24-megapixel and an f/1.7 aperture, and one lens with 5-megapixel and an f/2.2 aperture for bokeh effect.

Vivo V11's Dual Camera

V11 comes with a 25-megapixel selfie camera on the front, while it features a dual camera, 12-megapixel primary sensor + 5-megapixel depth sensor, on the back. V11 also has a lot of features, including AI scene detection, intelligent Face Beauty, AR Stickers, and more. Phase-detection autofocus and video face beauty are also available on the phone.

AI

Both of A7 2018 and V11 are equipped with AI systems to optimize the works. A7 has 19 customization modes while V11 features AI bokeh, AI selfie lighting, AI backlight HDR, AI low light mode, AI face beauty, etc.

Phone & Photo likes to assume that most people don't have the professional photo shooting skill and they very much gotta count on "Auto" or recently popular "AI" mode. Therefore, let's start this camera battle from AI test!

 AI "ON" TEST

Test1: Daylight color

Feel free to click the photos to check the EXIF on Flickr

When both phones are left in AI mode, the tree and canvas apparently have more color saturation and more contrast when shooting on V11.

Left (Up) Galaxy A7 2018/ Right (Down): Vivo V11

They perform only slightly different on the 2nd scene. Overall, the photo from V11 looks brighter whereas A7 2018 is more like what we saw on the spot.

Nowadays it's kinda hard to find a bad-performing camera when the light is sufficient. The difference among phone cameras mostly might be color tone and you would find your preference by personal taste. When shooting a colorful scene, V11's AI tends to render a more vivid but also more flattering color.

Test2: Daylight architecture

Left (Up) Galaxy A7 2018/ Right (Down): Vivo V11

Both cameras did very well while rendering different color tones. We won't judge, it's up to you.

 AI "ON" V.S. "OFF" TEST

We are wondering how much difference would be between AI on and off. Let's do some tests in several scenes.

Test1: Daylight green

►AI OFF

Left (Up) Galaxy A7 2018/ Right (Down): Vivo V11

►AI ON

Left (Up) Galaxy A7 2018/ Right (Down): Vivo V11

The difference between A7's AI-on and AI-off is more obvious than V11's when shooting purely green stuff. Both A7 and V11 increase the saturation under their AI mode.

Test2: Daylight flower

►AI OFF

Left (Up) Galaxy A7 2018/ Right (Down): Vivo V11

►AI ON

Left (Up) Galaxy A7 2018/ Right (Down): Vivo V11

When AI is on, A7 2018 makes the flower color more flattering and away from being true to life.

Test3: Yellow light food

►AI OFF

Left (Up) Galaxy A7 2018/ Right (Down): Vivo V11

When shooting in auto mode without AI working, the food photo from V11 looks more attractive owing to the more saturation and warmer tone. You'd even be able to tell the juicy meat under the crispy chicken skin.

►AI ON

Left (Up) Galaxy A7 2018/ Right (Down): Vivo V11

When AI was turning on, A7 2018 makes the whole photo much warmer whereas V11 doesn't produce much difference from AI-off mode.
However, A7 2018's AI didn't improve the texture and detail of the food. The bread in the A7's photo looks runny instead of crunchy. The chicken skin seems to be soft instead of crispy. Overall, A7's AI gives the food a warmer tone, but it looks flat; V11's AI barely helps the food scene and it looks a bit cold compared to the A7's photo.

BOKEH TEST

Both A7 and V11 have "Bokeh effect" feature which keeps focus on the foreground image and artistically blurs out the background. Their bokeh features both allow users to adjust the range. Let's take a look how they work differently when setting at minimum, middle and maximum range.

Test1: Daylight indoor

►BOKEH EFFECT: Min

Left (Up) Galaxy A7 2018/ Right (Down): Vivo V11

►BOKEH EFFECT: Mid

Left (Up) Galaxy A7 2018/ Right (Down): Vivo V11

►BOKEH EFFECT: Max

Left (Up) Galaxy A7 2018/ Right (Down): Vivo V11

When shooting at the minimum and middle ranges, A7 and V11 both performed well. When the setting went to the maximum range, V11 rendered more smoothly and naturally than A7 did. Unfortunately, you might find lens flare from this V11 image though.

Test2: Indoor portrait- rear camera

►BOKEH EFFECT: Min

►BOKEH EFFECT: Mid

►BOKEH EFFECT: Max

Left (Up) Galaxy A7 2018/ Right (Down): Vivo V11

Apparently A7 and V11 work in a different way in this test. A7 focused more on the foreground stuff- the cookie package while V11 focused more on the people. Thus, you might also find the edge of the denim jacket on the V11's photo is sharper than it on the A7's; however, the cookie pack was completely shown on the A7's image while it's miscalculated on V11.

Luckily, you can adjust the blur level or change the focus point anytime after capturing the pictures on both A7 2018 and V11. It's no doubt a very thoughtful and convenient feature for most people.

Test3: Indoor portrait - front camera

The depth effect is not adjustable on both A7's and V11's front cameras.

Left (Up) Galaxy A7 2018/ Right (Down): Vivo V11

Both A7's and V11's front camera work nicely on the bokeh effect. However, V11 still performs better than A7. If you try to look closely to the hair, V11 did a much better job to isolate the hair from the background.

 LOW LIGHT TEST

Test1: HDR on V.S. HDR off

►AI OFF HDR OFF

Left (Up) Galaxy A7 2018/ Right (Down): Vivo V11

When HRD turned off, photos from A7 and V11 both were overexposed. Despite being overexposed, the lightbox words are still readable on the V11 photo.

►AI OFF HDR ON

Left (Up) Galaxy A7 2018/ Right (Down): Vivo V11

When trued on HDR, both photos were improved dramatically. However, if trying to enlarge the images, V11 has an edge on sharpness and details.
It's very interesting that even the A7's spec looks much better than V11's, the performance doesn't really match.

Test2: Flash on

►AI AUTO FLASH ON

Left (Up) Galaxy A7 2018/ Right (Down): Vivo V11

The statue photo from V11 is pretty flat and losing lots of details when applying flash.

 BEAUTY MODE TEST

V11 offers 11 alternatives to adjust in beauty mode, including skin tone, buffing, thin face, whitening, face reshaping, eye span, thin nose, mouth shape, jaw, and so on. A7 also has some tools inside the beauty mode. We were trying to test and see how the result would be in three settings: manually set all tools as off, mid and max range.

Test1: Rear camera

►BEAUTY OFF

Left (Up) Galaxy A7 2018/ Right (Down): Vivo V11

►BEAUTY: MID RANGE

Left (Up) Galaxy A7 2018/ Right (Down): Vivo V11

►BEAUTY: MAX RANGE

Left (Up) Galaxy A7 2018/ Right (Down): Vivo V11

It's sort of weird that none of these images look like the model herself in real life. When shooting at the max range, the face skin shown on V11 was way too smooth and flattering. Instead, A7 still kept some pores and wrinkles to make the model overall looking more natural.
When we asked the model, Anna, which photo she liked better, she preferred the photo of V11- mid range.

Test2: Front camera (Selfie)

►BEAUTY OFF

Left (Up) Galaxy A7 2018/ Right (Down): Vivo V11

►BEAUTY: MID RANGE

Left (Up) Galaxy A7 2018/ Right (Down): Vivo V11

►BEAUTY: MAX RANGE

Left (Up) Galaxy A7 2018/ Right (Down): Vivo V11

A7 2018 and V11 render quite different skin tones. A7 gives rosy and pink color while V11 produces the skin color a bit yellow and warm. We also found that strangely, even the beauty mode was set at zero on V11, the face was still not as the same as the model herself. When we tweak it to zero (all beauty tools off), the face in the picture turned out wider than it in real life. Only when it adjusted to the mid range, the face in the image seemed to make sense to the testing team.
At this selfie part, Anna preferred the photos from A7- min range and mid range.

Test3: Law light selfie

►BEAUTY: MID RANGE

 Ultra-wide lens TEST

Left (Up) Galaxy A7: Normal / Right (Down): Galaxy A7: Ultra wide

Left (Up) Galaxy A7: Normal / Right (Down): Galaxy A7: Ultra wide

The performance of the ultra-wide lens in the A7 2018 is not spectacular. However, it's still an edge when you need it especially traveling time.

If you still feel troublesome to make a decision... We hope the tests as below will help you a bit.

If you are a travel enthusiast, A7 with an ultra-wide lens might be right for you.
If you love selfie, V11 provides numerous tools to customize your face. The result was really amazing.
If you prefer a camera to render the color more naturally, go for A7.
If you take pictures for food frequently, A7 seems more capable of giving the food more texture and details.
